Why are UT Dallas pre-health students so successful?

  • Bright Students – 24% of freshman scored >700 on SAT verbal and 36% scored >700 on SAT math. (from DWCommonDataset at UTD Data Warehouse).
  • Academic Scholarships – > 65% of undergraduates receive need or merit-based financial aid.
  • Roots in Research – The University of Texas at Dallas was created in 1961 as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest, renamed the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies in 1967, and donated by its founders to the UT System in 1969 to become “The MIT of the South.” UT Dallas initially offered only graduate degrees, but expanded to admit freshmen in 1990 with the restriction that admissions “be no less stringent than the criteria of UT Austin.”
  • Medical-Focused Biosciences – UT Dallas’s human-focused biology curriculum is better aligned to modern medical care than same-named degrees at many universities. At some universities, Bio I is plants and Bio II is animals; at UT Dallas, Bio I is molecular (requiring a full year of chemistry) and Bio II is body systems. At some universities, biology degrees require classes in taxonomy, animals and plants; at UT Dallas, biology degrees require biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.
